About the Event
Kodi's Paw-athon - has a number of events along the Maribyrnong River trail. This family & Pet friendly event is to raise funds and awareness for the not-for-profit research charity Australian Animal Cancer Foundation (AACF). A foundation that supports scientific research into cancer in companion animals such as dogs and cats. It funds equipment and expertise to treat animals with pre-existing cancer, simultaneously documenting valuable clinical information to help uncover the mysteries of cancer in both animals and humans. Furthermore, it also raises funds for cancer research, and donates to the Cancer Council Victoria.
The 3Km is the ‘Survivors & Supporters event’! This is an opportunity for people and their companion animals who have fought cancer or are fighting cancer, to run/walk hand in paw together in a united fight. The event is an emotional moment and at the same time uplifting to all involved.
Kodi was diagnosied with malignant mast cell cancer in 2017 & only given up to 9 months to live with chemotherapy treatment, and up to 3 months without treatment. Kodi went on to have chemotherapy treatment for the entire 2017, and countless surgeries. Kodis' diet was changed to a raw food diet. With his treatment, diet and special care of Frank & Louise East St. Albans Vet Clinic, Kodi is still here with us today :) .
In humans, cancer kills 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men. The incidence is almost equal in dogs, killing 50% of dogs over the age of 10 and 33% of those under.
Kodi intends for the event to continue to be an annual occurrence, providing long term support to the AACF & CCV, for cancer research in animals and humans alike.
